Westendorf, Austria
Gentle, tree lined ski pistes are on offer at the ski holiday resort of Westendorf
Now lift linked to the Kitzbuhel ski area, the ski holiday resort of Westendorf offers beginner and intermediate skiing from a picturesque and relaxed village.
Ki-West is 3km (2 miles) long and is named after the two resorts it joins (Kitzbuehel + Westendorf). A 4km ski run has been created which is also covered with snow machines.
Kirchberg is also in Kitzbuehel’s Grossraum area and covers about 150km, Austria's largest linked ski area, the SkiWelt, with 250km of runs. The combined ski area is 400km of runs with 148 lifts.
The resort is located close to both the Ski Welt ski area and the Kitzbuhel ski area. The new Ki-West ski lift that links the Westendorf ski area with the Kitzbuhel ski area is another effort to include Westendorf in the vast ski resources of the valleys around it. Whilst a short bus ride is needed to reach the Ki-West ski lift from the Kitzbuhel ski area, it is a welcome addition to the terrain. Most of the ski piste at Westendorf is gentle, tree lined and sunny; for more challenging ski terrain then Kitzbuhel or the Ski Welt are required. The Ski Welt area is accessed via a free ski bus from the lift station at Westendorf to the neighbouring ski resort of Brixen in Thale. The Ski Welt area is clearly visible from Westendorf, dominated by the Hohe Salve, and offers huge ski terrain, with varying levels of difficulty. The attractive resort offers decent après ski, in common with all Austrian resorts but is quiet in comparison to the nearby resorts of Soll and Kitzbuhel.
Westendorf offers a wide range of efficiently run traditional accommodation from 2 to 5 stars to suit every taste and pocket. Whether you want just bed and breakfast, an apartment or half or full board you are sure to find what you are looking for.
Hotels, boarding houses, apartments, guesthouse and pensions are situated all over the mountains, down in the valley and of course in the village itself. There is also a youth hostel for school parties. Below you will find just a few.
Most accommodation houses have relaxing balconies, terraces or gardens where you can just sit and relax and soak up Westendorf's picturesque surrounds.
Westendorf is well known for its range of apres ski bars. Whatever you're looking for you'll find it here. A traditional night can be found at the middle station - "Guesthouse Maierhof" where they also have "Happy Hour" or a quieter time in the Hotel Post (popular with ski instructors) and tourists alike. The village Pub is also a good place for meeting other skiers and here you can get a good glass of "Guinness".
